Our Little Garden
Hubby really wants to be a farmer, a real true farmer. Unfortunately for him we don't own lots of acreage, he has no farming experience (personally or even his family), and we do not have the means for him to quit his job and to buy a farm. My grandparents have a farm and
he drools every time we go to the country and wants to move there. I think I am not quite the country type of girl and the only way it would work for me would be if we had several acres right in the middle of town LOL!
For the time being Hubby is fulfilling his farming desire by making this little garden. It is just 4'x4' and divided into 1 square foot planting sections. I heard about square foot gardening on Jenn from Frugal Upstate's podcast show and checked out the book All New Square Foot Gardening from our local library. Hubby was thrilled with it and built out little garden and planted some plants and seeds.
You can see just over the last couple of weeks how much the garden has grown. Right now we have still only been able to use the herbs. We do have small starts of the veggies though and we are hoping to be able to make a harvest soon and enjoy our fresh produce!
We have realized a few mistakes made in planting, but it is all a learning process. The more Hubby and I do the gardening the better we will get at it I am sure. We are growing tomatoes (I think those are required in all home gardens), jalapeno peppers, red bell peppers, yellow peppers, beans, mixed lettuce, zucchini, cucumbers, Italian parsley, basil, cilantro, garlic chives, and onion chives. I should add that Hubby has also planted a raspberry bush, but it is in a different area of the yard. Tonight Hubby was already talking about adding on more sections next summer. We have a tiny yard so he can't get too big, but I admire his wanting to provide us fresh veggies and herbs.

Almost ten years ago, I planted twelve raspberry bushes. Only one of them grew that first year. The next year, I had three. This year, I have a patch of raspberries that's the full length of my house and at least four feet wide. It's crazy. I hope you have as much luck with your raspberries!
I love that your square foot garden has so much in it. Joe's garden is twice as big, but doesn't have a lot more in it. I should see if our library has that book. Thanks for the tip. :)
Bell Peppers! Ours didn't take! I wish that I had had more luck! I thought raspberries had to be in really wet climates? How is yours doing?
I have a brown thumb...I can't even keep house plants alive! But I think it is wonderful that your husband can do this and it must be great to bring in your own produce to eat.
You can still grow quite a bit in small gardens. We lived in Queens growing up with the amount of sun limited by what could peek between buildings and trees. My mom found a spot though and was able to grow lots of lovely tomatoes and peppers.
My husband built his own raised beds surrounded by barrels for growing all of our veggies in. The monsoon season that Ohio had this year didn't hurt us the way it did others because most of the excess drained away. We do have to supplement water more in the middle to end of summer - but our peas and cabbage are already up.
I love your square foot gardening!! My hubby is doing container gardening and its taking over all our space!!
That's a neat little garden. I should plant one, it would be great to have some fresh veggies.
Tell your hubby that you're not missing much being "real farmers". I grew up on a farm, we had both animals and crops. Being a farmer, you have very little money (for every "rich" farmer there's 100-200 "poor" farmers), you never get to take a vacation because you have to find someone to feed the animals everyday, your farm equipment inevitably breaks down in the middle of harvest season (because it's 20 years old and you can't afford to get any new equipment), the animals decide to have their babies at the most inoppurtune time (I remember multiple times my mom was on her way to work and had to stop because a cow was having trouble birthing and pull a calf wearing her dress clothes and heels!), etc.
such a cute garden! we have one too and it takes up most of our yard. fresh veggies is the way to go these days and so much fun :)

Aww! I love gardening. If the landlord would let us, and our dog wouldn't tear it to shreds, I'd have a little garden here!
I've never done the square foot gardening, but I hear it works really well!
LOL @ tomatoes being mandatory garden plants. I don't even like tomatoes, but for some reason, I always feel like I should be growing some.

We need something like that! We have a very shady yard, so it's hard to maximize the semi-sunny spots. I should get my husband that book!

Cute garden, I have tried to plant tomotoes, peppers, and carrots and it seems like every rabbits get to them. It's frustrating.
That garden looks good! I wish I had a green thumb and could grow a nice garden of my own. It is just dirt here in my yard- in the place where a garden should go!

Those are great photos.
I started with tomatoes this year. Not sure how green my thumb is, even though I do have farming blood in my family. I plan on doing more next year.
Very frugal!
I planted a garden this year and I have already harvested tomatoes, peppers, butter beans and okra. I just love fresh veggies!

I tried doing some flowers this year from seeds, but my husband killed them. I will definitely try some veggies next year
