Mom's New Tri-Cortical Ilium Wedge

Mom in her castMonday my mom had surgery on her ankle and foot. She is doing well and this surgery will help her get around much better. I'm at her house today in case she (or her dog) need anything since Dad is gone on Tuesday's usually.

The interesting thing is that she received donor tissue, to be specific she received a tri-cortical ilium wedge. We know others who have received different donations like liver, lungs, etc., but I hadn't even realized that they even use things like the part my mom received for her ankle. I was just amazed by that. They gave her a little card that explained what she had received and that it was a tissue donation and even gave her a way to send a thank you letter to the family of the person who donated the tissue.

I am thankful that this person (or their family) made the decision to be an organ/tissue donor. It is amazing to think how many people and families this one act of generosity will help. Hubby knows that if I go first he can donate anything they can use from me - I would be more than happy to help someone in a big or little way.

You can learn more about donations on the Donate Life America website. You can even commit to donation while you are there and print out a family notification card.

Both my husband and I have it checked on our driver's license that we would be organ donors. No close family member has ever needed something from a donor--at least not yet--but I think it is the right thing to do.

I agree that organ donation is the right thing to do; I also have it on my driver's license. I've been told, though, that it's incredibly important, to make sure your next of kin are fully informed and educated about your wishes, as they are the ones who will likely be consulted.

Glad you are able to be there with your mom to help her out, how is she feeling?

Wow, I had no idea either that you could donate something like that, but I guess it makes sense. I am always surprised at the people who don't think organ donation is a good idea. It is sad that more people don't do it! I have been an organ donor since getting my license, so have the boys. Their dad's family is Catholic and they say they don't believe in that. Which makes no sense to me, they are taught that the soul is what goes to heaven, that the body is just your earthly vessel but yet......

Gah. I could go on and on. But this really isn't about my frustration with the Catholic religion. LOL

It's just amazing to me what they can do now! Who knew you could get a tri-cortical ilium wedge from donated tissue? Well, not me, since this is the first I've heard of tri-cortical ilium wedge. Ha.

Hope your mom's recovery is going well!

In the past, I had been very skeptical of organ donation and I was young whan I got my license so I never opted for donation. These days I am more open to it, it's a good thing to give.

Happy your mom is doing well!!

Thanks for sending me here! My sister had a double lung transplant in 2001 and has been living with rejection issues ever since. However, we are grateful every day and would like to one day meet the donating family to thank them and let them see what their sacrifice means to us. Sadly, my sister was about 85 pounds and the lungs she received were approximately 12 years old (adult-sized lungs wouldn't have fit in her small chest cavity). So, celebrating her life is bittersweet for us because the other family obviously lost a child.

I am a strong proponent of organ donation and love working with local donation services to help increase awareness about the types of donations people can make -- including living donations!

As you can tell - I could talk about this forever! :)
