Queen of the Road - Review & Giveaway
QUEEN OF THE ROAD: The True Tale of 47 States, 22,000 Miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband, and a Bus with a Will of Its Own
I've been lucky enough to be a part of the online book tour for Queen of the Road from the Family Review Network. Plus all of you have a chance to win a great prize package worth $130+ as part of the tour!
Since we are in that time of year, right off the bat I can tell you that this would be a fantastic gift for readers on your gift list this holiday. Especially for anyone who does own a motor home or RV or anyone who has thought about taking that road in life even. Purchase Queen of the Road here.
UPDATE! Doreen stopped by to let us all know about her offer of free bookplates. You can find the details here on her website.
This is a humorous look at two doctors who decide to drive a motor home around America. The true story of their trip through 47 states and 22,000 miles. The story starts off with Doreen giving examples of her "princess" lifestyle and how she is not enthusiastic when her husband, Tim, suggest they take on this mammoth trip around the nation. You read about the task of finding and renovating the bus and then move into the actual trip. All of their ups and downs as they travel and some great stories about what happens along the way. Oh and I can't forget the numerous cocktail recipes scattered throughout the book. Throughout the book Doreen shares anecdotes of the places they go, events that happen, and people they meet. It's a light-hearted look at a trip many of us have thought about. You also see the changes the trip makes in Doreen and Tim. Nothing radical, but those subtle changes that happen to all of us as we journey through life. Doreen just has a knack for describing them to us in a warm and witty style.
Some thoughts from others about the book:
"A Charles Kuralt-Albert Brooks-style romp where they meet up with nudists,
robbers and more. Required Reading." -The New York Post
"A charming, insightful and - most important - hilarious book that evokes the
best of Bill Bryson and David Sedaris, but spotlights the unique voice of a gifted
memoirist." - Jonathan Kellerman, New York Times Bestselling Novelist

202 COMMENTS:
I'd LOVE to take a big trip around the country....someday! Since dh and I are both teachers, we really ought to do it one summer!
The book sounds hilarious! I will definitely check it out!
I enjoyed this book so much! I even sent it to my mom who goes on an RV trip every winter with my dad. Her biggest challenge is where to put her shoes and clothes too!
I would take off and go in a heartbeat. Having said that I would need a security blanket in the shape of my husband and my computer. But there is so much to see and such a short time to see it in.
Hey Robyn!
Thanks so much for the lovely review.
Since you mentioned QUEEN OF THE ROAD would make a fantastic gift (why, thank you for that, too!) I just wanted to let your readers know that on the homepage of my website, there is a way to get free, personalized, signed bookplates, in case anyone wants to give an autographed book as a gift (even to him or herself).
Oh - don't enter me in the contest! That just wouldn't be Royally Sporting.
My three loves are quilting, reading, and traveling. Give me any of the above and I'm all set.
I was looking for a list of bloggers that were participating in this. I couldn't find it. Glad I found you.
I remember watching one of her videos promoting the book and it is HILARIOUS. Her husband even gets in on the action and goofiness. I would love to read the book. I am not sure how I would do in an RV. My husband would love to sell the house, everything we own and tour the country in an RV. Not me. I love my home.
i don't have the guts to go it alone. i definitely want to with my husband when the boys are older.
I absolutely love traveling more than anything in the world. This year I've been to Los Angeles, Columbus Ohio, Indianapolis Indiana, and Gatlinburg Tennessee. If I weren't a FT student and employee of a newspaper, I would travel more!
cathryn@graphicsbycathryn.com
I would never travel alone, unless I was the only one left on this earth, then I would have no choice!
I am a teacher, so getting time off (in the summer) would not be a problem. I'd love to take a trip like that by motorhome.
I would love to take a trip like that, but I get motion sick.
would love to take a trip around the country with my love!!
thanks!
moore.g@insideconnect.net
I'd like to see all 50 states, we've seen about 20 so far. Some states appeal to me, others do not at all. I'm a big lover of travel. cdziuba@aol.com
I guess i would enjoy a big trip around the country someday - wouldn't be possible at this point in time in my life!
wonderful prize. please enter me i would love to win!!!
i love to travel
It would be nice, because I love to travel. :)
lilacbutterfly [at] earthlink.net
This is how my husband dreams of spending his retirement years is traveling in an RV so I can't wait to read "Queen of the Road" Thanks for having such a wonderful contest

It sounds like a great book! I'll check it out!
would love to- could go visit all the ballparks too! mrs.mommyyatgmaildotcom
i could never take such a trip, i'd be too scared! I worry way to much so i know i wouldn't have that great of a time. Maybe if i went to a few states at time would be easier for me. Little chunks of the country would be nice!
this book sounds fun to read
When my kids go off to college I would love to take a trip like this! Sound like alot of fun!
Carla
cpullum(at)yahoo(dot)com
I want this for me! I need it!
I like the idea of a trip around the country, but I don't think it is actually something I would do. I would miss being away from home for that long.
i love a good book and i've always dreamed of taking an RV trip across the country. I'd love to read it
yes i would love to do that with my best friend ! thnx for the opp!
That would be really scary!
I never need an excuse to travel....I would just drop everything and go (kids 10 and 13 can be left on their own for a year right?)
This would be so much fun! I'd love to do this! Maybe someday....
digicat{AT}sbcglobal{DOT}net
Well, yes I would do this. It's been a long-time dream of mine.
I would definitely take a trip!
I WOULD LIKE TO TRAVEL AROUND THE GOOD OLD USA, BUT NOT WITHOUT MY WIFE
I have already made such a trip in my youth and am in the process of traveling around the World but only with my best friend, my wife.
As long as I'm with my best friends, then yes, I'd take a trip around the country, but I'd prefer to take a trip to East Asia.
lilnamekangelivy[at]aol[dot]com
I would definitely take a trip like this! I recently road tripped from Texas to Oregon and it was fantastic.
thedizdar(at)gmail(dot)com
I would love to see the country on a trip like this.
definitely
yes if i had a doctors salary to fall back on i'd love it
You bet I would travel by myself!! I love to be alone and do things by myself....dreaming of it now...!!
Most definitely! We always talk about seeing Europe but we there is so much in the good ole USA that we haven't experienced.
I would definately go on a road trip. But I would go with a girlfriend, like Thelma and Louise. Wouldn't go anywhere with the grump I'm married to.
I'd love to do a trip around the world- or anywhere!
It would be so amazing. I would have to have an ipod charger for my car, which makes me think of a professor I had who said we rely to much on noise to block out thoughts, but I find that music helps me think. It would be pretty great to see the country while rockin out to my tunes. This book sounds pretty funny though, I hope I win!
lkziegler[at]gmail.com
What a great adventure. I th ink it would be the trip of a lifetime.
I would do it as it sounds fun! Thanks!
NO, i would never go on that kind of a trip. I can't sleep anywhere but at home.
rebbi511 at peoplepc.com
My DH dreams of doing this in retirement. His goal is to visit every major league ball park in North America and then start in on the minor league ones! With the right technology along (cell phone, lap top, etc), I would be happy to go too!
beccaj73[at]hickorytech[dot]net
I'm not really big on major traveling
so I don't think I could ever do it. Now ask me if I'd like to go to Las Vegas and I would immediately. The book does sound great though. Thank you for this great giveaway!
judybrittle at aol dot com
I would definitely do this! Matter of fact, even though it's not exactly the same thing, I plan on moving from Maryland to Washington state (Tacoma area) within the next 6-8 months, and I will be doing so with two of my children and maybe a boyfriend. Should make for an interesting time!
Great giveaway!
Have a good day!
Angie
i would if i had to..
I've done a number of roadtrips. My family did driving vacations just about every year from the time I was very young until I was in high school. I saw most of the US and much of eastern Canada that way.
In college, during the 1996 Olympics, I did a road trip to California with six of my friends. We had to go somewhere as we were kicked out of campus housing (I went to Georgia Tech, which served as the Olympic village), so we decided to take one of the guys to his cousin's wedding outside of LA. We drove over 5000 miles in four weeks, went through four tires, two water pumps, a couple of fan belts and a whole lot of gas. We stayed with friends, family, friends of people's family and, in one case, people who were friends of someone who was a friend of a guy's former youth pastor...so, people we didn't know at all. It was a great time. Road trips are a blast.
Thanks for the chance to win the book.
ruthann (dot) francis (at) gmail (dot) com
I have always dreamed of taking a trip exactly like this. I hope to one day be able to afford it.
3oink63moo484 (at) gmail(.)com
Oh, I heard about this book a month or so ago. It sounds fun. As for me? I don't think I could ever do something like this..must be one heck of an experience though!!
-lauren
lauren51990 at aol dot com
Maybe if I won a trip I would
Of course I would. Life is an adventure. Just think of the wonderful people and places that you would get to experience.
don't think so
Nope. Gotta have at least one other person to share my experiences with!
I'd be scared to do it alone...just incase my car broke down, but it would be a self-learning experience...that's for sure!
No, I don't think it's wise for anyone to travel by theselves.
No, I wouldn't do it by myself but I would definitely love to do it with my hubby.
tskrush (at) cox (dot) net
i would never be able to do this by myself. oh no. to scared.
mommy2skie@yahoo.com
I'd totally do it - I'd do it now if my boyfriend wasn't still in school...
I would love to go on a long trip around the country with my husband.
I would love to take a trip around the country. That has been my dream for years. Glad you did it.
I totally would - when the kids are a little older!
I just read this recently after seeing it here on your blog. This woman is hilarious and so easy to relate to. This is a book I will read again and again, especially when I need a good laugh. Thanks for the heads up. Anyone who has not read this, buy a copy NOW!
It would be great to take a trip around and see all the great sites there are with my family.
Not with a 4-year-old, but later in life I would love to see the country with my family. Thanks!
linjenals at yahoo dot com
I love to travel, but not alone, so I'd have to take my husband who is the only person with the same horrible sleep in get up late, work ethic. He doesn't like RVs though, so reading about it might be the only way to do it.
I think it would be great to be able to go on a trip like this. I have always wanted to travel around the US but have just not had the opportunity yet.
My husband and I plan to buy a big RV when our girls go off to college and tour North America! This book is in my "must read" pile!
JLHalsted(at)hotmail(dot)com
I think I would when my daughters are grown. I really couldn't imagine living on a bus or RV though, so I'd have to really think about it.
I like how you had the whole blog tour posted-I'm new to the network and want to ask-were we supposed to do that? I didn't realize; I thought we were just supposed to visit each other's sites. Just wondering so I don't mess up in the future. :)
That sounds like a great book. When I was a kid our family holidays were often road trips. I think I've seen half of the US and 90% of Canada thanks to those trips. I'd do it again ... road trips are great!
dragonden { at } rogers { dot } com
Not a chance. :-)
This book sounds good! I love road/travel stories.
I would really love to take a trip like this... don't know about all the pets but it would be fun! :-) Thanks for the giveaway!
ladyufshalott at yahoo.com
sounds fun, but I would have to do it with someone, not by myself!!
Yes, I would. I enjoy being by myself and I love the idea of an adventure.
I'd love to take such a trip, just not sure if I could handle being couped up with hubby that long.
I couldnt leave my kids.
I couldn't imagine being able to take a year away from work and real life to be able to travel like that. If I could, I would...but maybe not in an RV. Haha.
Sounds like a really great way to see the country, I'd love to do it.
But with 4 cats?? I don't know about that...

bwalleshauser AT yahoo DOT com
No I wouldn't go on a trip by myself as it wouldn't be fun
Id take a trip like this as long as I was with my son and mom...couldn't be away from them for too long. :)
ddavidpatrick at gmail dot com
I used to think that I could take a trip around the country, but then I had kids and realized just how hard it is to travel lightly and go on a whim!! It'll be a while before I do any cross country driving!!
Great book and giveaway!
i love road trips! i do it all the time!
definitely want to with my husband when the boys are older.
That's my dream - to drive cross country - once my husband retires. Not sure if we'll do it on a bus or an RV though.
shawnsbidness(at)yahoo(dot)com
Actually, now that gas prices are kinda low it wouldn't be a terrible idea, but it wouldn't be a typical road trip with the kids. Hypothetically I'd love to do it.
Rockapink [at] aol.com
I think it would be great...
I would love to...maybe after I finish grad school (that might be never!)
Would love to take a trip around the country with my husband. Would prefer an RV to travel

I would love to take a road trip alone and stop along the way to visit with people I know.
I remember taking road trips as a child and I would love to be able to do that with my daughter. We all need to get out more often!
A trip would be nice. I don't travel much. Never had the money. Still live within 3 miles of homestead. Please enter me, thank you
It would truly be magical to travel the country with my amazing sweet'ums! : ))) So much to brilliantly discover and enjoy! : )))
Thanks so much for this fabulous give~away! : )))
leahita[at]gmail[dot]com
I'd LOVE to go on a trip like this! Ive been trying to get DH to do it for years now.
Not alone but have to have husband there.
I had to chuckle when I read about the book! My husband and I have wonderful memories of taking road trips. It's the little things in life that make it all worthwhile!
It has been a dream of mine for years to take a six month North American road trip - visiting all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. The in-laws just laugh and say it will never happen, but I truly believe it will. It might take ten or fifteen more years, but eventually we'll make it happen.
wundergrl21 @ gmail . com
Let me tell you...Breast Cancer changes the way you think...and see life. I would take a trip like this in a heart beat !! Now my hubby on the other hand, well, that could be another story...LOL !
He's a homebody, so we'd have a problem right off the bat. And if I couldn't talk him into a trip around the country, I'd take my children or a friend with me...how exciting a trip like this would be !!
This sounds like an extremely fun and interesting read. Thanks so very much for a great giveaway !
Merry Christmas,
Cathy
tholix at pineland dot net
I enjoyed the book. And I am almost ready to agree to going on a trip with my husband one day, but not the whole "sell the house and live in an RV" deal he is trying to get away with when the kids move out.
I am not a fan of car trips, we just got back from our first family road trip (with four kids airfare for six was ridiculous) and while it was a great vacation our 6-8 hour a day driving was something I can do without!
I have thought about this a lot. "Blair" from Facts of Life did that with her kids (and a donated RV), it sounded really cool. Especially since we also homeschool. It would be fun to see all of the "important" places in America & everything in between! :)
needanap2@gmail.com
Sounds like fun but I would have to have a loved with me to travel with me :) ty 4 the fantastic giveaway and entry!
yes, i would consider it
i would really think about it.
I'm a stay at home person myself. Please accept my entry. Thank you.
I have taken this sort of trip before, went all over the country with my husband, and we did it all in a big truck!!
I would do it. But I would prefer to take my husband and daughter with me.
I would totally do it. Sometimes you just need to take time for yourself to appreciate life.
I'd love to take a trip around this country

Yes, I would. I hope to do it someday!
I haven't read this book yet, but it sounds wonderful. And yes I would love to take a trip around the country like this. Happy Holidays.
I wouldn't do it by myself. I wouldn't feel safe, especially because I don't know another language. Also I don't think it'd be as much fun not having someone to share it with.
i would surely want a traveling companion with me.
I'd love to travel...finally! After a marriage of 37 years to a guy who won't go anywhere (because he traveled while in the military), I've finally gotten my passport and am ready to go...by myself!
I would definitely take a trip like that! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!! :)

I've always had the dream of taking off in the RV, just driving, sightseeing, starting from home and just zig zagging all over the USA.
I actually knew some people that did this with their young children, the stories they have shared with me are priceless. They stopped and worked when they needed to but it was an adventure they will never forget. That is something I would love.
I would love to read this book! Gotta get my hands on one.
Thank you for the chance and Happy Holidays
Christina - xristya@rock.com - I actually DID take a trip like this once, with an aspiring comedian who was promoting himself in clubs while I was promoting myself as a writer with literary editors. I'd LOVE to do it again, but don't know if I'll ever get the chance!
I'd love to take a trip around the country, but I wouldn't want to do it alone.

I've read great reviews on this book.

I love the IDEA of traveling on long road trips, but I, invariably, get car sick. No, not the kids, I do. It's terrible, really. My husband teases me about it mercilessly!

Yes! In fact two years in a row I tried getting a job with "Teen Tours"- a program for teenager that basically takes them on a road trip across the country. I was so excited to go but it didn't work out both times. :( I would never do it alone, but with my hubby I would!

This book sounds like a fantastic read! Yes, I would consider taking a trip around the country by myself, or with a close friend! Thank you for making my imagination once again take me away to a wonderful place! Happy Holidays everyone!

I would love to take a road trip around the country. I have had the opportunity to travel to other countries but i would really enjoy a USA TOUR. Be it in an RV or staying at whatever roadside place i find. It would be quite and adventure. My cats would have to stay home. But i would like to go with my husband and children. I love seeing things like the worlds largest ball of string, and jumbo icons.
