Queen of the Road - Review & Giveaway

Queen of the RoadQUEEN OF THE ROAD: The True Tale of 47 States, 22,000 Miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband, and a Bus with a Will of Its Own

I've been lucky enough to be a part of the online book tour for Queen of the Road from the Family Review Network. Plus all of you have a chance to win a great prize package worth $130+ as part of the tour!

Since we are in that time of year, right off the bat I can tell you that this would be a fantastic gift for readers on your gift list this holiday. Especially for anyone who does own a motor home or RV or anyone who has thought about taking that road in life even. Purchase Queen of the Road here.

UPDATE! Doreen stopped by to let us all know about her offer of free bookplates. You can find the details here on her website.

This is a humorous look at two doctors who decide to drive a motor home around America. The true story of their trip through 47 states and 22,000 miles. The story starts off with Doreen giving examples of her "princess" lifestyle and how she is not enthusiastic when her husband, Tim, suggest they take on this mammoth trip around the nation. You read about the task of finding and renovating the bus and then move into the actual trip. All of their ups and downs as they travel and some great stories about what happens along the way. Oh and I can't forget the numerous cocktail recipes scattered throughout the book. Throughout the book Doreen shares anecdotes of the places they go, events that happen, and people they meet. It's a light-hearted look at a trip many of us have thought about. You also see the changes the trip makes in Doreen and Tim. Nothing radical, but those subtle changes that happen to all of us as we journey through life. Doreen just has a knack for describing them to us in a warm and witty style.

Some thoughts from others about the book:

"A Charles Kuralt-Albert Brooks-style romp where they meet up with nudists,
robbers and more. Required Reading." -The New York Post

"A charming, insightful and - most important - hilarious book that evokes the
best of Bill Bryson and David Sedaris, but spotlights the unique voice of a gifted
memoirist." - Jonathan Kellerman, New York Times Bestselling Novelist

I'd LOVE to take a big trip around the country....someday! Since dh and I are both teachers, we really ought to do it one summer!

Meleah 11/28/08 1:57 PM

The book sounds hilarious! I will definitely check it out!

Julie 11/28/08 2:55 PM

I enjoyed this book so much! I even sent it to my mom who goes on an RV trip every winter with my dad. Her biggest challenge is where to put her shoes and clothes too!

djolsen 11/28/08 3:38 PM

I would take off and go in a heartbeat. Having said that I would need a security blanket in the shape of my husband and my computer. But there is so much to see and such a short time to see it in.

Doreen Orion 11/28/08 4:34 PM

Hey Robyn!

Thanks so much for the lovely review.

Since you mentioned QUEEN OF THE ROAD would make a fantastic gift (why, thank you for that, too!) I just wanted to let your readers know that on the homepage of my website, there is a way to get free, personalized, signed bookplates, in case anyone wants to give an autographed book as a gift (even to him or herself).

Oh - don't enter me in the contest! That just wouldn't be Royally Sporting.

kathi 11/28/08 7:15 PM

My three loves are quilting, reading, and traveling. Give me any of the above and I'm all set.

Momstart 11/29/08 12:51 AM

I was looking for a list of bloggers that were participating in this. I couldn't find it. Glad I found you.

- Marybeth I. 11/29/08 11:45 AM

I remember watching one of her videos promoting the book and it is HILARIOUS. Her husband even gets in on the action and goofiness. I would love to read the book. I am not sure how I would do in an RV. My husband would love to sell the house, everything we own and tour the country in an RV. Not me. I love my home.

wigget 11/29/08 2:15 PM

i don't have the guts to go it alone. i definitely want to with my husband when the boys are older.

Cathryn 11/29/08 2:44 PM

I absolutely love traveling more than anything in the world. This year I've been to Los Angeles, Columbus Ohio, Indianapolis Indiana, and Gatlinburg Tennessee. If I weren't a FT student and employee of a newspaper, I would travel more!

cathryn@graphicsbycathryn.com

mar 11/29/08 2:56 PM

I would never travel alone, unless I was the only one left on this earth, then I would have no choice!

artmarcia 11/29/08 3:21 PM

I am a teacher, so getting time off (in the summer) would not be a problem. I'd love to take a trip like that by motorhome.

Margaret 11/29/08 3:27 PM

I would love to take a trip like that, but I get motion sick.

Vicky H. 11/30/08 3:39 AM

As long as I'm with my best friends, then yes, I'd take a trip around the country, but I'd prefer to take a trip to East Asia.

denyse 11/30/08 10:03 AM

I'd love to do a trip around the world- or anywhere!

Lori 11/30/08 10:04 AM

It would be so amazing. I would have to have an ipod charger for my car, which makes me think of a professor I had who said we rely to much on noise to block out thoughts, but I find that music helps me think. It would be pretty great to see the country while rockin out to my tunes. This book sounds pretty funny though, I hope I win!

My DH dreams of doing this in retirement. His goal is to visit every major league ball park in North America and then start in on the minor league ones! With the right technology along (cell phone, lap top, etc), I would be happy to go too!
beccaj73[at]hickorytech[dot]net

judybrittle 11/30/08 12:25 PM

I'm not really big on major traveling
so I don't think I could ever do it. Now ask me if I'd like to go to Las Vegas and I would immediately. The book does sound great though. Thank you for this great giveaway!

angie 11/30/08 1:00 PM

I would definitely do this! Matter of fact, even though it's not exactly the same thing, I plan on moving from Maryland to Washington state (Tacoma area) within the next 6-8 months, and I will be doing so with two of my children and maybe a boyfriend. Should make for an interesting time!

Great giveaway!
Have a good day!

jffryclough 11/30/08 2:49 PM

i would if i had to..

Rue 11/30/08 2:55 PM

I've done a number of roadtrips. My family did driving vacations just about every year from the time I was very young until I was in high school. I saw most of the US and much of eastern Canada that way.
In college, during the 1996 Olympics, I did a road trip to California with six of my friends. We had to go somewhere as we were kicked out of campus housing (I went to Georgia Tech, which served as the Olympic village), so we decided to take one of the guys to his cousin's wedding outside of LA. We drove over 5000 miles in four weeks, went through four tires, two water pumps, a couple of fan belts and a whole lot of gas. We stayed with friends, family, friends of people's family and, in one case, people who were friends of someone who was a friend of a guy's former youth pastor...so, people we didn't know at all. It was a great time. Road trips are a blast.

Thanks for the chance to win the book.

Nope. Gotta have at least one other person to share my experiences with!

Erica C. 11/30/08 8:17 PM

I'd be scared to do it alone...just incase my car broke down, but it would be a self-learning experience...that's for sure!

No, I don't think it's wise for anyone to travel by theselves.

I love to travel, but not alone, so I'd have to take my husband who is the only person with the same horrible sleep in get up late, work ethic. He doesn't like RVs though, so reading about it might be the only way to do it.

Mia J. 12/1/08 5:48 PM

I think it would be great to be able to go on a trip like this. I have always wanted to travel around the US but have just not had the opportunity yet.

I think I would when my daughters are grown. I really couldn't imagine living on a bus or RV though, so I'd have to really think about it.

Miche 12/1/08 11:10 PM

I like how you had the whole blog tour posted-I'm new to the network and want to ask-were we supposed to do that? I didn't realize; I thought we were just supposed to visit each other's sites. Just wondering so I don't mess up in the future. :)

Tricia 12/1/08 11:49 PM

That sounds like a great book. When I was a kid our family holidays were often road trips. I think I've seen half of the US and 90% of Canada thanks to those trips. I'd do it again ... road trips are great!

It has been a dream of mine for years to take a six month North American road trip - visiting all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. The in-laws just laugh and say it will never happen, but I truly believe it will. It might take ten or fifteen more years, but eventually we'll make it happen.

I enjoyed the book. And I am almost ready to agree to going on a trip with my husband one day, but not the whole "sell the house and live in an RV" deal he is trying to get away with when the kids move out.

Heather 12/10/08 3:20 PM

I am not a fan of car trips, we just got back from our first family road trip (with four kids airfare for six was ridiculous) and while it was a great vacation our 6-8 hour a day driving was something I can do without!

NeedANap2 12/10/08 3:33 PM

I have thought about this a lot. "Blair" from Facts of Life did that with her kids (and a donated RV), it sounded really cool. Especially since we also homeschool. It would be fun to see all of the "important" places in America & everything in between! :)

I haven't read this book yet, but it sounds wonderful. And yes I would love to take a trip around the country like this. Happy Holidays.

kohndr 12/15/08 11:07 PM

I wouldn't do it by myself. I wouldn't feel safe, especially because I don't know another language. Also I don't think it'd be as much fun not having someone to share it with.

strawberry3d 12/16/08 1:12 AM

i would surely want a traveling companion with me.

Kathy 12/16/08 2:05 AM

I'd love to travel...finally! After a marriage of 37 years to a guy who won't go anywhere (because he traveled while in the military), I've finally gotten my passport and am ready to go...by myself!

Beeb 12/16/08 2:09 AM

I would definitely take a trip like that! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!! :)

I've always had the dream of taking off in the RV, just driving, sightseeing, starting from home and just zig zagging all over the USA.
I actually knew some people that did this with their young children, the stories they have shared with me are priceless. They stopped and worked when they needed to but it was an adventure they will never forget. That is something I would love.

I would love to read this book! Gotta get my hands on one.

Thank you for the chance and Happy Holidays

Christina 12/16/08 2:52 AM

Christina - xristya@rock.com - I actually DID take a trip like this once, with an aspiring comedian who was promoting himself in clubs while I was promoting myself as a writer with literary editors. I'd LOVE to do it again, but don't know if I'll ever get the chance!

Anonymous 12/16/08 3:48 AM

I love the IDEA of traveling on long road trips, but I, invariably, get car sick. No, not the kids, I do. It's terrible, really. My husband teases me about it mercilessly!

Yes! In fact two years in a row I tried getting a job with "Teen Tours"- a program for teenager that basically takes them on a road trip across the country. I was so excited to go but it didn't work out both times. :( I would never do it alone, but with my hubby I would!

I would love to take a road trip around the country. I have had the opportunity to travel to other countries but i would really enjoy a USA TOUR. Be it in an RV or staying at whatever roadside place i find. It would be quite and adventure. My cats would have to stay home. But i would like to go with my husband and children. I love seeing things like the worlds largest ball of string, and jumbo icons.

Paulie 12/17/08 10:55 AM
